Isämies, päivää!

Aloitin vitsillä, en osannut lopettaa. Ensin oli hehheh-hauskaa laittaa peräkkäin Spaceman, Man on the Moon, Man on Mars, Starman… mutta sitten, tiedättehän, sessio venyi obsessioksi. Walkin’ Man, Running Man, A Man With No Ankles, Broken Man. Puujalalla konkaten.

Onneksi listalle löytyi viimein saturaatiopiste 150 kappaleen kohdalta. Enää ei tuntunut tulevan vastaan mitään, mikä pääsisi yllättämään tai mitä pitkin pääsisi minnekään.

Kuvailun ja analyysin paikka. Tarina alkaa intronomaisesti Pixiesillä (Here Comes Your Man) ja Johnny Osbournella (My Name Is Man). Oppaamme ”man” oppii soittamaan monia instrumentteja (Mr. Tambourine Man, Piano Man, Guitar Man).

Hän kulkee popmusiikin historian läpi Fannie May Goosbysta (I Believe My Man Has Got a Rabbit’s Leg) 22-Pistepirkkoon (Motorcycle Man) ja Woody Guthriesta (The Biggest Thing Man Has Ever Done) Blonde Redheadiin (Falling Man). Aikakaudet vilahtelevat laulujen kehyksissä.

Useimmiten säkeet, joista mies itsensä löytää, ovat arkisia (A Well Respected Man) tai tunteellisia (To Make a Big Man Cry). Ääripäinä ovat avuttomuuden kuvat (Man is the Baby) ja maskuliinisuusfantasiat – joskus on kyse samanaikaisesti molemmista (Iron Man).

Yhteiskunnalliset olot eivät päästä miestä helpolla (How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live). Oravanpyörä pyörii (Puppet to the Man), mies vieraantuu (Modern Man).

Mies menee hukkaan itseltään (I’m Not the Man I Used to Be). Hän on yksin, hyvin yksin (The Loneliest Man in History).

Onneksi nainen etsii miestä (Where Is My Man). Mies tykkää olevansa naisen silmissä peräti komea (Sharp Dressed Man). Hän tosin kenties tumpeloi tunneilmaisussaan (Manchild). Sitten onnistaa kunnolla (When a Man Loves a Woman). Miehestä tulee isä sukupolvien ketjussa (Little Man). Mies katsoo ihmistä itsessään ja valaistuu (Acts of Man).

Lopulta mies kuolee, muutaman kerran.

The Beatlesin Nowhere Mania ei Spotifyssa valitettavasti ole, eikä coveria eräältäkään lupaavasti nimetyltä Elevator Tunes -kokoelmalta nyt huolittu mukaan. Toisaalta ylittämättömänä neverheard-machokuriositeettina diskon nahkasohvalta listalle nousi Günther, joka Sunshine Girlsinsä kanssa esittää albumilta Pleasure Man kappaleen I Am Your Man. Olen pahoillani.

Pophistoriallisista syistä listalle oli otettava myös Bonnie Tylerin turboahdettu kasarihitti If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man), vaikka se sisältää aivan liian monta elementtiä, joita ei. Voi. Kuunnella. Ei ainakaan yhtä aikaa. Bonnien ansiot ovatkin tässä yksinomaan queer-poliittisia.

Tahollaan sukupuolirooleja sotkee ihastuttava Jayne/Wayne County and the Electric Chairs (Man Enough to Be a Woman). Ja tietysti Morrissey: ”I would go out tonight / but I haven’t got a stitch to wear” (This Charming Man).

Tutkimuksellinen johtopäätös on sekä ennalta arvattava että väistämätön: miehestä on moneksi. The Man, A Different Man, Batman.

Lisäksi näyttää siltä, että eniten ”man”-otsakkeisia kappaleita maailmassa on tehnyt Neil Young.
